Selection and
use of supplementary materials and activities
Supplementary
materials are extra resources which
support coursebook. Those materials could be authentic in order kids feel involved
with English language. In addition, supplementary materials help to catch
students´ attention and help them not feel bored just using the coursebook. These
resources must be connected with the teacher´s aims with the purpose of follow the
lesson plan and syllabus.
Teachers have to
select the appropriate supplementary materials taking into consideration some
features like learning style, learners´ needs, age, level, and external
conditions. These aspects are necessary at the moment to choose the correct
methodology and materials because teachers who are interested in students´ progress
could vary or adapt their teaching style. It is important because teacher can
provides a lot of input in order to develop the four skills together through
solving or being involved in real situations.
During classes
it could be applied in the way that firstly teachers must have an idea what the
topic is about looking in the syllabus. Then, they use their creativity and get
students involved with the topic using sources like newspapers, magazines, cds,
videos and so on, to later use the coursebook and put in practice all they have
learnt. Finally, teachers look for new supplementary materials in order to
reinforce students´ knowledge. It means that teachers´ organization plays an essential
role, so a sequence with subsidiaries aims help to achieve the main aims that teachers
propose for students´ learning English language.
As a conclusion,
coursebook is not enough for learning and supplementary materials support teaching
process in order to consolidate learners´ knowledge.
